The Defusing Process

• Shortened version of a debriefing
• Group intervention after trauma
• Designed to lessen critical incidence stress (CIS)
• Defusings conducted within 8 hours of the incident
• Lasting only about 20-45 minutes
• Lessens the impact of the event on responders
• Screening tool for further interventions/referrals
• Aims to restore to responders to normal duties at work and at home
• Can be an avenue to a debriefing, if needed
• Defusings are shortened interventions to provide information and resources to affected responders
