WHEN TO CALL:

  • You should call after a serious tragic call that affects you
  • Call if your crew or partner are upset after a call
  • You should call if you or a crew are having the following:
    • Trouble sleeping
    • Trouble eating-loss of appetite
    • Appear short tempered
    • Emotionally upset
    • Feeling sad
    • Having family issues after a traumatic response
    • Depressed
    • Not feeling yourself
  • If these signs and symptoms occur with hours, days or weeks after a horrific event or traumatic response call CISM
  • If your signs and symptoms last more than 30 days you should consider seeking emotional support from your PCP, EAP or behavioral health provider.
  • On the back of your insurance health card is a hotline to contact for long term 3-6 months or greater care. There are also hotlines that deal with long term consultations listed in our web site on the resources page both locally and regionally.
  • Pittsburgh CISM is only for recent occurrences and does not offer services for long term emotional or psychological issues.

or an operational officer/supervisor can call
or a Chief or Director can call
or a family member can call
or a friend can call

If you are in crisis, go the nearest hospital or call 911
If your crew member, family, or friend is in crisis call 911

WHO CAN CALL PITTSBURGH CISM:
Anyone can activate our free confidential services. We do not charge for response; however, we only offer services for:

  • Emergency Medical Services Personnel
  • Fire Personnel
  • Police Personnel
  • Dispatchers at 911 Personnel
  • Medical Flight Personnel
  • Hospital Personnel-Nurses, Medics, Doctors and Staff
  • Heavy Industrial Personnel

All others should contact their PCP, EAP, County Health Department Behavioral Health Division or go to the nearest hospital for services. We do not offer CISM to the public but have been asked to stand-by for major events supporting the local Health Department.

WHEN YOU CALL -WHAT HAPPENS-The Steps:

  1. Call placed to Hotline 412-647-2473
  2. CISM Hotline answering service receives the call
  3. Answering service takes name and number for recall
  4. CISM on-call supervisor receives call from answering service
  5. CISM supervisor returns phone call to caller
  6. Location of incident is determined for response and the county of the incident is determined to ensure the response call is in our jurisdiction (ALLEGHENY COUNTY-primarily) -if not our CISM on-call supervisor will contact the closest CISM team to respond and a post follow up call is done to ensure call is covered
  7. CISM supervisor determines response needed:
    1. On-on-one
    2. Crew (several members)
    3. Crew Shift (Numerous members)
    4. Entire Scene Group (Public Safety Responders)
    5. Public Safety Scene Staff or Public Employees
    6. Hospital Unit Staff/Shift
    7. Hospital Emergency Department Staff
    8. Industrial shift personnel
  1. CISM supervisor coordinates with caller for session arrangements/face-to-face and/ or zoom setting up the time-date-location-number of possible participants
  2. CISM supervisor arranges a CISM team member response with Peers and Behavior Health Specialist.
  3. CISM team response to the location determined
  4. CISM team performs a Defusing or De-briefing or One-on-one session offering information, education and resources
  5. NO NOTES are taken-It is our priority to enforce CISM Response Confidentiality -NO INFORMATION is shared
  6. Follow-up is performed with initial contact
  7. If referrals are suggested or required, the CISM supervisor offers suggestions of resources available
  8. Confidentiality is our priority and requirement
